Designing Downtown Video Vignettes

These days it seems like I am taking more video than photos.

Probably because I actually am… ;o)

I just wrapped up a video project I did with the fine folks of Designing Downtown in Edmonton a few days ago.

Some of you have already seen the Edmonton Promo Video I shot for them, but here are 2 additional vignettes that we put together after shooting 28 interviews in 4 days…

What a rush!!!

Last month I spent a few days in Edmonton on several projects.

One of them consisted of filming the 2013 First Nation Conference for Sustainable Buildings and Communities.

And at some point during the conference, the bands REDDNATION and Asani joined forces to perform their latest duo “Take a Stand” for us.

So as I was filming by myself, I had 2 options on that one:

Either leave the camera on a tripod and catch the whole thing, wide angle style (did anybody say “boring…”?), or grab my camera off the sticks, and run like hell around the singers and dancers while they were performing in order to get as many different angles as possible.

Good thing I like running…

A few weeks ago, the Lovely August Wiled stopped by my studio to do what she loves most… Dance!

At the time I just got my hands on the latest “Muse” album and thought some of the songs would go nicely with a ballerina dancing.

Here is what we came up with, I’d love to know what you think of it.

And of course, if you are in the neighborhood, please, feel free to come to my studio to pose, dance, have fun!
I’d love to have you.

When your client asks you to wear a vest like that for your shoot, you know you are about to have an interesting day.

As I knew my mom was not really gonna love the idea of me having to wear a “Stab Vest” to work, I waited a bit before blogging about it. But I am now back in Vancouver so all is well.

This type of vest is what the security men of Martyshuk Housing have to wear to work.

It is designed to stop any punch, knife, baseball bat or crowbar. And it will also keep you seriously warm when you are working by -25 degrees.

Working amongst the homeless community is an incredibly intense and rewarding job, but it has its risks as well. Most of the time Martyshuk Housing tenants are very calm and friendly, but sometimes, people are under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol and become agitated or violent. That’s why the security team has to wear those vests when they are doing their rounds. Better safe than sorry.

The fact is that a few of the security guards can attest, first hand, that those vest can stop a knife.

Anyway, I flew back to Vancouver last night and I had an absolute blast with Martyshuk Housing’s team. We shot a lot of interviews, security interventions, smiles, tears and various war stories. We’ll start editing this very soon, as I can’t wait to share the footage with you all.

Ever wondered how it feels like to do 90 Km/h on water?!

I never did, but I actually figured it out the hard way.

A couple of years ago, I was working on a project here in Vancouver, filming boats between Jericho, English Bay and the Vancouver Harbor.

The easiest way to film some of the boats was to ride on one of the rescue zodiacs during the patrol.

And this is what happens when a boat capsizes at the other end of the bay and no one knows if the skipper has surfaced yet.

The life guard, yells: “hang on to something!!!” and then floors it with no other warning. Those who know me are very much aware that I don’t miss an opportunity to film or photograph, so I grabbed the boat with one hand and filmed with the other.

This is by far one of the most brutal experiences I have had to go through while shooting. Feeling that you are going to fly off the boat anytime.(This footage has not been sped up, it’s the actual speed)

Everything is fine until you pass the Lion’s Gate Bridge and then the boat starts flying…

Good thing Pelican cases are made for this type of adventures.

Remember when a few weeks ago I was shooting a “behind the scenes” video for Jennifer Williams, one of the finest boudoir photographers in Vancouver?

Well, at some point I asked Jennifer to point her camera directly toward mine and start shooting, you know, so at some point in the video I can have footage from the model’s point of view and all.

You’ll see the video I made pretty soon, but in the mean time here is the shot that Jen took.

It is quite rare to have photos of me in action so I figured you would enjoy that one. I know I do. Thanks Jen.

I have a shoot tonight and I’ve been asked to bring a long lens…

Here is what I’m taking with me.

I have 400mm (70-200mm + x2 extender) attached to my camera, that should do the trick. Those who know me, are well aware that this blog is not called “a life at 50mm” for nothing. So that should be a nice change for me.

I also made sure to add a monopod to my kit, as I don’t want to hold that thing all night.

I’m not telling you what (or who) I am shooting yet, but you should see some photos here in the next few days.

Here is the second video of the new “My Song” Series.

This one features Victoria and she is dancing/singing on her favorite song: "And the Boys", by Angus and Julia Stone.

We filmed this video a few months ago, and since then, got quite a lot of request for more.

A few more models are already booked in the next weeks, so hang on to your seats, because we’ll have more to share pretty soon.

Also, check out the first video of this series with Lizbit here:
