A week ago, my good friend Liz stopped by the studio and had short hair.
A couple of days ago, she came back for a visit, with long hair this time.
Not a wig, but just very cool extensions. I’m thinking maybe I should try that as well. It looks like fun.

A lot of people ask me why I photograph so many women and not as many men. I don’t really know why. I guess it’s mostly because more women ask me to photograph them, so the ball started rolling that way and my portrait portfolio now mostly consists of female models.
But, recently, my photographer friend Chris Thorn asked me that question again, so I decided to have him at my studio and show him that I could photograph good looking dudes as well.
To my female followers, that one is for you… ;o)

My good friend Lizbit stopped by the studio yesterday just to say “hi” but I couldn’t resist taking a photograph of her new hair…

Last week I got the pleasure of meeting Fiona Wade.
Fiona and I happen to have a lot of people in common, but somehow our paths never crossed over the last 4 years I have been in Vancouver.
After a couple of instagram comments, emails and such, we finally met for coffee last Thursday and she came to the studio on Saturday.
And for the occasion we tried a bunch of new light styles (new for me anyway). As many of you know, I usually photograph my models using natural light, and find it very comfortable to work with.
But comfortable is rarely a good idea when it comes to creative fields so I decided to mix it up a little bit.
For those of you who think that they can’t take good photos because they don’t have the proper equipment, or enough money to buy cool lights, I just want to clarify that, on this pic, Fiona is lit by a couple of lights that add up to about 23$… (To buy them, not to rent!)
So I don’t wanna hear that excuse again, ever!
Though, finding a great model is priceless, I give you that…
More details about this very soon.

Here is a photo I shot a few months ago with my friend Jessica.
Jess is an incredible make-up artist in Vancouver who also masters the art of modeling and doing incredible fitness competitions. That’s when she’s not traveling, writing, or making art and calligraphy.
She is one of the busiest business woman I know. If you need a solid make-up artist in BC, give her a shout, you’ll thank me later.

A few days ago, my friend Rianne stopped by the studio for a portrait session. I photographed Rianne for the first time last year as part of my EKTA Series, but since then, her hair went from short and dark black to long and flashy red.
Since my hair is short and dark too, maybe I should try this flashy red thing as well… What do you think?
More photos coming very soon…

You saw, the version of that photo with August sharp and Ruffle blurry here a few days ago, here is now the photo taken about one second later.
You guys have no idea how much I enjoy shooting with my new 85mm. That lens is so fast and soooo sharp at f/1.2!
I haven’t actually used it at any other aperture so far, and I am not about to, as it is so bokehlicious! (as my friend Thierry M would say.)

I am just about to go to the airport for another trip to Edmonton, but before I go, I would like to share another portrait of my friend August Wiled with you all.
As you know (if you read my blog yesterday), August dropped by the studio on Saturday and we took plenty of cool photos, with a lot of different setups.
There might have been another model there too, but that’s a surprise for another day…

On Saturday, I had my first official shoot in the new studio.
As you might have seen on the previous photos, the space is big and white. But what you haven’t seen, is that we do have some cool steal doors and other funky materials here and there that we can use, so we don’t always shoot against a white wall.
To prove my point, I had my friend August Wiled over.
August is a model, singer, flute and guitar player, burlesque dancer and has been practicing ballet dancing for 16 years. Quite the resume!!!
If you’re looking for a great model in Vancouver, I definitely suggest you check her out.
We shot a lot of photos to get acquainted with the new studio and this is one of them.
What do you think?

When your client asks you to wear a vest like that for your shoot, you know you are about to have an interesting day.
As I knew my mom was not really gonna love the idea of me having to wear a “Stab Vest” to work, I waited a bit before blogging about it. But I am now back in Vancouver so all is well.
This type of vest is what the security men of Martyshuk Housing have to wear to work.
It is designed to stop any punch, knife, baseball bat or crowbar. And it will also keep you seriously warm when you are working by -25 degrees.
Working amongst the homeless community is an incredibly intense and rewarding job, but it has its risks as well. Most of the time Martyshuk Housing tenants are very calm and friendly, but sometimes, people are under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol and become agitated or violent. That’s why the security team has to wear those vests when they are doing their rounds. Better safe than sorry.
The fact is that a few of the security guards can attest, first hand, that those vest can stop a knife.
Anyway, I flew back to Vancouver last night and I had an absolute blast with Martyshuk Housing’s team. We shot a lot of interviews, security interventions, smiles, tears and various war stories. We’ll start editing this very soon, as I can’t wait to share the footage with you all.

I spent the past week or so organizing my next shoots in Edmonton and the next ones in Vancouver (as soon as I am back here, on Dec 6th) so I haven’t had time to shoot that much recently.
The good news is that the next 10 days, starting tomorrow, are gonna be crazy busy and I will have a lot to share with you all.
In the meantime, here is a photo that I took a few months ago, that I never got around to processing… Until yesterday.
This is Lizbit, who is somehow rocking the “blond Joan of Arc” look.
I like it. Do you?

A few weeks ago, I had never heard of a round dance.
Then I met the amazing people from New in Town Edmonton (Aboriginal Welcome Service).
And part of my work for them was to photograph and film a round dance at the University of Alberta. This is by far one of the most intense experience I’ve had in a long time.
Being in the middle of those men while they chant and drum is truly breathtaking.
If you ever have the chance to witness that yourself, I strongly advice you do so.
