Tagged: lens.

As I mentioned last week, I don’t really do Christmas and I really don’t expect any presents from anyone. But what I didn’t mention was that I love treating myself with a nice new lens every once in a while.

Let me introduce the latest addition to my kit. (I’m talking about the cute piece of glass in the middle.)

So, this blog won’t be called “A life at 85mm” but you are about to see a lot more photos shot at this focal length.

Oh, and for those who know a thing or two about aperture, that baby opens at f/1.2, so if you think I had a pretty shallow depth of field before, you should hang on to your boots because backgrounds are about to get very very blurry.

For those of you who still wonder why you sometimes have to “show off” with a big lens, here is why…

Last night, I was asked to cover Rick Hansen’s “Celebration 25th!”.

"Celebration 25th!" is the conclusion to the 25th Anniversary of Rick Hansen’s "Man In Motion World Tour!".

If you don’t know who Rick Hansen is, check him out. I won’t go in details about how amazing he is (you should discover that by yourself while checking out his foundation), but as my friend Bob said last night: “thank God I’m not a crier because this is very inspiring and overwhelming”.

Anyway, when I received my media kit, the event’s organization sent me a map of the venue that basically showed us that the photographers were standing at the opposite side of the arena during the show…

And it is a big arena, so we were told to come prepared. Meaning: “bring the longest lens you can find.”

I only had a 70-200mm handy so I improvised and grabbed the 2x extender that basically got me at 400mm.

You loose 2 stops in the process (you have to shoot at f/5.6 instead of f/2.8) but I was hoping that they would blast enough lights on the artists for me to shoot around 1/100s even at f/5.6.

And they sure did.

This is a photo of  Johnny Reid, left is what could have happened if I wasn’t prepared and right is the kind of photos I got.

More to come very soon.

I have a shoot tonight and I’ve been asked to bring a long lens…

Here is what I’m taking with me.

I have 400mm (70-200mm + x2 extender) attached to my camera, that should do the trick. Those who know me, are well aware that this blog is not called “a life at 50mm” for nothing. So that should be a nice change for me.

I also made sure to add a monopod to my kit, as I don’t want to hold that thing all night.

I’m not telling you what (or who) I am shooting yet, but you should see some photos here in the next few days.

A few days ago, I got lucky enough to be featured on my good friend Pamela’s blog.

I met Pamela when she was living in Vancouver a couple of years ago (she is now back to New-Zealand). We were working together on photo/video projects and she occasionally posed for me. (of course)

Anyway, when she moved back to the kiwi motherland, she started a blog with her better half, Ivan and their beautiful baby girl, Mika.

Since then, her blog got bigger and bigger, (check it out here), and she created a few sections about, her baby, her photography, her friends’s mix-tapes and more recently about photographers.

And that’s where she contacted a few shooters all over the planet and asked them a few questions about their lives and photo career.

Please, feel free to check out my “interview” here and all the amazing photographers that she contacted here.

I feel honored to be considered “inspiring” by her and to be in the same category as the other people she contacted. Thanks Pam !

How do you wash a kid’s hands when you’re at the beach and you don’t want to put sand on his feet?

Pretty simple when the child is about 33 pounds…

Notice my nephew’s excellent taste in clothes ;o)

I have my dear brother Romain to thank for that photo. ;o)

I’ve been back from San Francisco for a couple of weeks, and it’s now time for me to grab another plane to France.

I’ll be there for a few weeks, on vacation mostly but I’ll try to book a few shoots when I’m in Paris.

In the mean time, please forgive me if I don’t post as much as I am used to.

Talk to you all soon.

Brice.
